Ford Edge vs. GMC Terrain

Edge
Two of the top crossovers in the automotive market are the Ford Edge and the GMC Terrain. With similar sizes and capabilities, it would be easy to assume that there isn’t much difference between them. But is that actually the case? Before you make a purchase, it’s worth your time to get to know these two a little better to see how they are similar and where they differ.

The article below will dive into the basics of each of these vehicles so you can get familiar with what they offer and why you might select one over the other. Finding the Space You Need

While these vehicles both fit nicely into the crossover category, they are not the same size. Taking a look at these two in person will quickly reveal that the Ford Edge is the larger vehicle. It is longer, wider, and taller than the Terrain, and has more room on the inside, as well. There is not a lot that separates the two vehicles in terms of styling and design – they actually look quite similar for vehicles that come from two different makers – but the Edge is bigger all the way around.

Is that added space a good thing? Well, that’s up to you to decide. To be sure, it will be appreciated by anyone who rides in the vehicle, as there will be more head and leg room to enjoy long drives. Also, when you need to pack things in the back of the vehicle, you’ll have more space to do so in the Edge. Of course, additional size doesn’t come without a cost,  the Edge typically uses a little more gas to get where it is going compared to the Terrain. That difference is minimal, however, so it might not be one of your major deciding factors.

A Matter of Performance

Those who enjoy driving will want to make sure any vehicle they purchase has the power necessary to keep up with traffic – and have a little bit of fun along the way. Sure, these aren’t sports cars, but that doesn’t mean they have to be dreary to drive, either. Since they aren’t as big as the large SUVs on the market, you’ll enjoy a comfortable driving experience in either one, and you shouldn’t have much trouble with tasks like finding a parking spot or making it down a narrow street.

When looking for power, it’s the Edge that is going to grab your attention first. It has a larger engine than the Terrain, and that engine produces significantly more horsepower and torque. Not only does this lead to an enjoyable driving experience, but it also helps in terms of towing. If you want to tow something small, you should have little trouble with the Edge – while that probably won’t be an option if you choose a Terrain.

Strong Marks on Safety

Each of these vehicles does well in safety testing and includes a long list of safety features as standard across all models. Some of those features include a backup camera, blind spot monitor, traction control, and lane departure warning. The Ford does come with a couple of extra standard features for safety – like a rear parking aid and brake assist – which aren’t included on the Terrain.

Cost Comparison

The Ford Edge will typically come with a higher price tag than the Terrain, but those prices will vary depending on the options you select. It’s important to remember that the Edge comes with a bit more loaded on the vehicle as standard, so that should be considered in the price comparison. And, since the Edge is a bigger vehicle, some of the additional cost can be attributed to how much extra room you will have for both people and cargo.

When you add it all up, the Ford Edge is a vehicle that’s hard to pass up. With enough size to easily accommodate most outings, and a driving experience that is a little more exciting than what you might have expected, the Edge is a solid pick that is sure to serve you and your family well.
